The Jagiellonian University signs an agreement on collaboration with the international research center FAIR

On October 26th, a meeting of the management board delegation of the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) with the authorities of the Jagiellonian University and Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Computer Science took place at Collegium Maius. The purpose of the meeting was to sign an agreement between the two institutions on scientific collaboration and student exchange based on the GETInvolved programme. The oldest University in Poland was represented by the Vice-Rector for Research, Prof. Piotr Kuśtrowski.

The FAIR delegation included the managing director Prof. Paolo Giubellino, Technical Director Dr. Joerg Blaurock and the GETInvoled Program Coordinator Dr. Pradeep Ghosh. After signing the agreement both parties discussed the role of the Jagiellonian University in the construction of FAIR. In the discussion took part, apart from the FAIR delegates and Prof. Kuśtrowski, Chairman of the Council of the Polish Shareholder to the FAIR GmbH Prof. Zbigniew Majka, the Vice-Dean for Research of the Faculty Prof. Piotr Salabura, and Alicja Nowakowska from the Jagiellonian University Legal Department. The FAIR facility, currently under construction in Darmstadt, will be one of the largest accelerator facilities of its kind in the world for basic physics research and applications using antiprotons and ions.

The Jagiellonian University was appointed in 2010 by the Minister of Science and Higher Education as a Shareholder in the international company FAIR GmbH and since then it has been coordinating Poland's participation in the construction of this large research infrastructure. Scientists from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science are implementing several large contracts related to the construction of scientific equipment and accelerator cryogenic systems that are part of FAIR.

The signed agreement will enable scientists from the Jagiellonian University to make much wider use of the research capabilities of the FAIR center. The prepared agreement is particularly oriented towards young scientists by launching a dedicated system of internships, scientific internships and jointly conducted master's and doctoral theses.

The official report from the meeting was published on the GSI portal under the title “FAIR Days Poland” hosted by Jagiellonian University Krakow.
